Week 2 | The Scandal of the Cross | Doubting Thomas
SUMMARY
The apostle Paul described the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus as scandalous because it challenged conventional beliefs. On the cross, Jesus forgave those who wronged him, offering salvation to a criminal beside him, which challenges the notion of earning salvation through good deeds.
The disciples expected Jesus to stay dead- and when he showed up in the flesh- Thomas struggled to believe. Thomas doubted until he personally saw Jesus.
We all deal with doubt at various levels. Many are taught to diminish their doubts and it’s unfortunate because our doubts don’t disqualify us- they should actually drive our faith towards health. How do we deal with our doubts? Thomas shows us that we can press into Jesus with our doubts and he responds at our point of need.
Our doubts aren’t a reason to panic, but to process with God. The story of Thomas illustrates that encountering doubt isn’t the end of faith but an opportunity to press into Jesus and seek understanding. Rather than disqualifying one’s faith, doubt can lead to deeper insights and a stronger relationship with God. Like Thomas, individuals are encouraged to bring their doubts to Jesus and trust in his ability to provide answers and strengthen their faith.
